Southern Nevada water carries a lot of dissolved mineral. Wash a car with it here and you are in a race: the droplets have to be dried off before they evaporate, and in Henderson sun they will win that race every time. What is left behind is a mineral deposit sitting on hot clear coat, and given a few weeks it etches in.
That is why both vans carry deionized water. The minerals are stripped before the water ever touches your car, so a droplet that dries leaves nothing behind.
It is also why we hand wash two-bucket with grit guards rather than running a brush over the car. Nearly every swirl mark we polish out of Henderson paint came from a tunnel wash or from somebody wiping dust off a dry panel.
When the paint feels gritty even after a wash, washing is not the answer.
